Who We Are

Founded in 1990, the Wild Whale Research Foundation has pioneered studies of numerous species of rare, tropical odontocetes in the Hawai’ian Islands, including pygmy killer whales, false killer whales, short-finned pilot whales, and Cuvier’s and Blainville’s beaked whales.

The Wild Whale Research Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit research organization based in Holualoa, Hawai’i.

Meet the Team

  • Dan McSweeney

    Founder Dan McSweeney first started working with the various whale species off the island of Hawai’i in 1976. Photos taken by Dan, his WWRF team, and collaborators have been compiled into the longest running individual photo-identification catalogs anywhere in the world for: false killer whales, pygmy killer whales, Cuvier’s beaked whales and Blainville’s beaked whales
